How does it work?

Typically, Rolfing® SI takes place over a systematic series of ten sessions. Each session addresses a different goal--helping the feet to support the body, opening the breath, waking up the muscles that support the spine, etc.--and falls in a specific order relative to the other sessions. It is this systematic approach that makes Rolfing® SI different from other types of structural work such as massage or chiropractic. The "Ten Series," as it has come to be called, is recommended for most people who are considering Rolfing® because it addresses every part of the body--from the soles of the feet to the cranium--with the goal of bringing health, vitality and alignment to the physical being. However, if you would like to give Rolfing® a try without committing to ten sessions, come in for one to three sessions and see if it makes a difference in how you feel.

What should I expect during a session?

You should wear something that you are comfortable working in. Most people prefer underwear (bra and underwear for women), but yoga pants and a tank top are fine as well. Avoid clothing that is too bulky, tight or restricts movement. Sessions often, but not always, run up to ninety minutes so it's best to allow an hour and a half in your schedule. During the session you will be asked to stand, bend, sit or walk so that the Rolfer™ can assess your range of motion. Most work takes place on a massage-type table or sitting on an adjustable bench. The contact can range from very light to what some have described as "pleasurably intense," but is foremost and always controlled by YOU, the client. If something is uncomfortable, or if you have any questions, you are always encouraged to communicate it. There should be an open dialogue throughout the sessions; the goal here is to facilitate discovery and awareness, not to cause discomfort.
If you are curious about Rolfing® but not yet ready to sign up for several sessions, I would be happy to do a free half-hour consultation in my studio or home office to address any questions or concerns you might have, and to demonstrate what Rolfing® feels like.
